On the Spectrum 🧩

A Message from Susan:
A lot of people tell me they wonder if they are “on the spectrum” as it is trending all over social media and the news. So today’s newsletter is about overlapping symptoms and how nothing in mental health ever fits nicely into one easy to understand box.📦
Many mental health challenges can look surprisingly similar. Anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and even trauma can all involve difficulties with focus, emotional regulation, social interactions, energy levels, or burnout. The challenge is that the same symptom can come from very different underlying causes. For example, trouble concentrating in ADHD may stem from distractibility, while in autism it may be related to sensory overload. It is important to understand patterns and causes, not just ask Chatgbt to check off symptoms on a list.
Co-morbidity means a person can have more than one condition at the same time. Someone might have both ADHD and anxiety. Below is a chart that shows how some common mental health challenges overlap.
